Day 63: March 4, 2009

Question 14:
Which is more important, intelligence or common sense? Why?

Responses:
  • I think it's more important to have common sense. I feel like intelligence is something that you can build by exploring, learning, etc.. However, you either have common sense or you don't and honestly I think that common sense takes you so much farther as you can sometimes bullshit your way out of having intelligence.
  • Common sense. I wonder how it's done, but I get the impression you can get through life without ever having had an intelligent conversation or thought. Common sense, though, will keep you alive. It's a mix of instinct and critical thinking.
  • Common sense, no question. I think of intelligence as the ability to learn and analyze information and common sense as the ability to see the simple, indisputable facts presented to you and act accordingly. It’s usually pretty difficult for most of us to follow, or even find, our common sense—“Just use your noggin,” as some would say—and, in fact, our intelligence often gets in the way. But you do need both, of course: Intelligence is like a map of possibilities that we construct for ourselves and common sense the internal compass that points the way.
  • Intelligence. It breeds common sense. It doesn’t work the other way around.

Song:
Yours to Keep, by Teddybears

Lyrics:
Won't you call my private number?
We can go away for the summer!

We can drive around with the top down
Stereo turned up loud with a fat sound
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to

But I hear that you wanna ditch me
But you know I'm not such a bad seed.

We can drive around with the top down
Stereo turned up loud with a fat sound
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to

We can have some fun with an ear drum
We can bang away on the tom tom

We can drive around with the top down
Stereo turned up loud with a fat sound
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to

Won't you come on down to the freak show?
We can sit and watch as my hair grows.

We can drive around with the top down
Stereo turned up loud with a fat sound
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to
Cause I'm yours to keep if you want to
