Day 106: April 16, 2009

Question 24:
How would our society be different if it were matriarchal instead of patriarchal?

Responses:
  • The Ms. magazine answer: tampons would be free. My answer: wealth would be distributed differently, and the big fights would be over different things.
  • I don’t think we would be in a war. Abortion rights might not be debated publicly as it would be obvious that women should have the right to choose. Family leave from work, extended maternity leave and child care might be enacted. Universal health care might be implemented. There would be more stay at home dads. And maybe women wouldn’t be so concerned about the shape of their body, the texture of their skin, beauty, and aging and just live to feel good. High heels and stockings would be obsolete.
  • Society would be more communal, individual sacrifice for the greater (group) good. There would be more extended-family like relationships among people regardless of blood relationships.
  • We are matriarchal in many ways—PC, most dominantly, which is negative. Overall, would be more open, accepting—which seems like a contradiction.

Song:
Kosinski, by The Angels of Light

Lyrics:
When the light shows
Through your window
I can see you there
In the mirror

Touching blond hair
That’s a river
Of translucent
Liquid life

Are you singing child
I can hear you here
Just by watching
Lips reflecting
Just by watching
Small breasts rising

With the rhythm of your breathing
I’m not here now
But I see you there
With your blue veins
Softly tapping skin

With the rhythm of your breathing
With the rhythm of my thinking
Are you sleeping now?
I could touch your silver hair

While your sleeping child
You can’t feel me here
